The First day with the Karmic-Koala

I was very excited with the release with the long awaited Ubuntu 9.10.... Was constantly F5-ing the ubuntu home page and staring at the coming soon image since the midnight of 29th Oct ... But only it changed during the late afternoon that day... They should have mentioned the exact time of realease on the web-site. My patience was tested... but no probs ... I must thank Robin Sharma and Rhonda Byrne for they have really changed the impatient being.

But even after the release the life was not easy... The college server refused to download huge files. Then I remembered something called port-forwarding that I had read few days back... Refreshed it and the trick was done!

My hard-disk management was really bad and I had everything lying all around the disk and needed everything to be organized. So I preffered to go for a fresh install. Coup de grace for the Jackalope.

(btw I loved Jaunty very much ... but change is the law of life).

I created a USB-boot disk and then process began ...

The initial interface was similar to the previous version but when the installtion began it showed a slide-show along with it. That was pretty good and talked about the new features included with the Koala. The overall installtion process was identical to previous distros. It took around 15-20 minutes for the complete process. Except that ext4 was the default file-system.

... Reboot ....

The grub appeared to be different as expected as they had told that grub 2 would default bootloader.

It also recognized the other installation to be Windows 7 which whould be shown as Vista in the previous version. (Windows is a must when I wish to boast of Ubuntu ;) ) The Linux kernel 2.6.31 was provided...

The welcome screen was clean and refreshing. The gdm 2.28 login screen was better than the previous one. The looks have changed and are very soothing.

The start-up was not as much fast as expected but was definitely faster than the previous version. Courtesy "Upstart Technology".

Some more features were the default IM client was Empathy which is pretty cool and easy to use. Ubuntu One was shipped along (not used yet), firefox 3.5 was bundled by default. Also they had provided some good wallpapers by default which were absent in all the previous distros. One more thing that I noticed was that during my Jaunty installation the screen supported only 800x600 pixels until i manually installed the nvidia drivers. But with this I had a higher resolution by default.

They have also improved the intel video driver architecture which I guess will remove the graphic related problem which most laptops had with Jaunty.

Overall the first impression that the Koala has made is a pretty good one and hope that it maintains the ubuntu promise :)

“A newborn Koala spends about six months in the family before it heads off into the wild alone.”

Hope we all will enjoy the company of the koala for six-months. :)

Go ahead ... Green Signal... :)
